Dr Choi graduated with BDS, MBChB and MDS (with distinction) from University of Otago, School of Dentistry in Dunedin. His clinical focus is in wisdom teeth extractions and simple to advanced dental treatment. In particular, he has a special interest in advanced bone grafting procedures, full mouth implant rehabilitation (All-on-4 and Zygoma implants) and digital implant dentistry.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr Choi lectures and presents extensively, both at national and international conferences, symposiums and meetings. Dr Choi is a well-respected speaker for world leading implant manufacturers and digital dentistry such as NobelBiocare, Osstem and 3 Shape. He also presents numerous hands-on training programs including live surgical demonstrations.

At NSOMS Dr Choi runs interactive learning and training courses for his colleagues in wisdom teeth extractions, basic implantology, bone grafting, All-on-4 and Zygoma implants. All-on-4 procedure is one of the major scopes of practice procedures performed routinely by Dr Choi. Dr Choi is one of the surgeons that have performed the most of All-on-4 procedures in New Zealand to date and he is teaching, sharing his knowledge and experience with other clinicians nationally and internationally.

Dr Choi grew up on the North Shore before moving down to Dunedin for his training at University of Otago and Dunedin Public Hospital. After spending more than 10 years in Dunedin, he feels privileged to return to North Shore and look after patients from his home town where he lives today with his lovely wife Jae and his two kids.

He loves playing tennis and skiing with his family. Dr Choi is also a keen golfer which keeps him physically fit and mentally refreshed. His other interest, when the weather is not cooperating for outdoor activities is digital technologies innovation and its implementation in dental healthcare.

Dr Rajpal is a fully registered Specialist Oral Surgeon. He has completed close to 10 years of training from both the University of Otago, NZ and the University of Sydney, Australia.

Graduating with a Clinical Doctorate of Oral Surgery has allowed him to become a highly trained specialist. Dr Rajpal practices the full scope of oral surgery including management of pathology such as cysts and tumours of the jaws, surgical removal of teeth including wisdom teeth, placement of dental implants, both bone and soft tissue grafting procedures, as well as management of jaw joint disorders and facial pain. He has previously been a consultant Oral Surgeon in public hospitals within Sydney and now calls Auckland home.

Dr Rajpal was a Clinical Lecturer and Examiner in Oral Surgery at both the undergraduate as well as postgraduate levels with the University of Sydney.  He is also involved with clinical research having recently completed his research on the Epidemiology of Facial Fractures in NSW.

His main interests are:

  • The management of complex/impacted teeth that require surgery.
  • Complex implantology requiring bone grafting/sinus lifting.
  • Minimising the post-surgical recovery period and orofacial pain.

Dr Goldsmith graduated from the University of Otago with a Clinical Doctorate in Oral Surgery after spending nine years in Dunedin studying and conducting doctoral clinical research.  He has a special interest in reducing pain and swelling after wisdom tooth removal through the implementation of various techniques.  Dr Goldsmith also specialises in dental implant treatment including analogue as well as digital fully guided single and multiple implant placement. He performs surgeries for Implant Supported Overdentures, Implant supported full fixed dental replacement including All-On-4 and Straumann Pro Arch (Full mouth implant rehabilitation).

Dr Goldsmith is a fully registered, Otago trained Specialist Oral Surgeon. He has been a director and Oral Surgeon at NSOMS since 2015.  Prior to practicing on the North Shore he practiced for 5 years in Hawkes Bay as a Specialist Oral Surgeon both in private practice and contracting for Hawkes Bay Hospital. Dr Goldsmith has practiced and tutored students at the Dunedin Public Hospital and the University of Otago.

During these roles he acquired a wealth of experience in the management of oral diseases and disorders, the removal of wisdom teeth, apical surgery, dental implant surgery and associated procedures, among other oral surgical procedures.

Dr Payne has 40 years of experience across private practice, university teaching and senior management. Being the specialist prosthodontist at NorthShore Oral and Maxillofacial and Oral Surgeons, Dr Payne works alongside Dr Choi, Dr Goldsmith and Dr Rajpal completing rehabilitation of mutual patients and changing their quality of life and self-esteem.

His focus with the NSOMS surgeons is with cosmetic makeovers in younger adults missing a few teeth, as well as All-on-Four / Zygoma approaches on older adults missing all their teeth using fixed implant bridges and removable implant overdentures. Having worked in implantology since the 1980’s in numerous countries worldwide, Dr Payne has experienced the evolution of treatment options for patients with missing teeth from multiple historical analogue approaches to a state-of-the-art full digital workflow. Dr Payne also consults and treats patients needing complex crown and bridgework as well as those with temporomandibular disorders. He is well known for his expertise in implant overdentures.

With his surgical colleagues at NSOMS, Dr Payne provides robust prosthodontic input to interactive learning, didactic courses, and hands-on training programs. This includes lecture and live prosthodontic demonstrations to supplement similar comprehensive surgical components.

Dr Payne established Northland Prosthodontics Ltd in Whangarei, Northland where he spends weekends enjoying life keeping fit with regular walking and exercising locally and in the nearby world-renowned Bay of Islands. He is always busy with commitments for ongoing clinical research in oral implantology as an independent researcher.

He still serves as a reviewer and member of editorial boards for numerous peer-reviewed journals in prosthodontics and implantology. Also working for the Cochrane Collaboration, Manchester, UK, he is an author of several systematic reviews on implantology which require regular updates.

Lily graduated from the University of Otago in 2017 and is a fully registered oral health therapist. She has extensive experience working with both adults and children, previously working at Hutt Valley District Health Board. Lily has a diverse range of experience in dental hygiene and therapy including working with patients at general dental practices, periodontal specialist clinics as well as the prosthodontist, oral surgery and maxillofacial surgery specialist team at NSOMS. She works closely with specialists Dr Choi, Dr Rajpal, Dr Goldsmith and Dr Payne to deliver personalised and expert care and outcomes to all the patients she sees.

She is passionate about oral health and believes in delivering the highest quality of care to every patient. Furthermore she is often complimented by her patients for her thorough gentle clinical skills and warm caring manner. Everyone she sees is offered tailored oral health education based on individual needs to achieve optimal oral health and implant health.
